Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding at Windsor Castle had so many tender, heartwarming moments that it's hard to pick a favorite. There was one sweet gesture, though, that had royal watchers getting a little teary eyed. I'm talking, of course, about Prince Charles stepping up to walk his future daughter-in-law down the aisle after her father was unable to attend the wedding.
In Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70, a new BBC documentary about the heir to the throne, Prince Harry recounted how he asked his dad to walk Meghan down the aisle. "I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, ‘Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you.’"
The 34-year-old prince went on to say that, "For him, that’s a fantastic opportunity to step up and be that support, and you know he’s our father so of course he’s gonna be there for us."
Another touching moment was when Harry saying "Thank you, Pa," as Prince Charles arrived at the altar with the bride. "I've been brought up well. You've gotta say thank you. Just because he's my father that doesn't mean I can just sort of go, 'Okay, that's all, I'll take it from here,'" Harry said in the documentary. "I was very grateful for him to be able to do that."
The gesture is especially meaningful because Meghan reportedly helped bring Prince Charles, Prince Harry, and Prince William closer over the past few years. An unidentified royal family member spoke to Vanity Fair, revealing that "the wedding was a real turning point" for the Wales boys. "Charles showed so much love towards Harry and Meghan, and I think Harry will be eternally grateful to his papa for stepping in and giving Meghan’s hand in marriage," the source said. "The bond between them is very close."
Royal watchers weren't the only ones moved by Prince Charles's gesture, either. His wife, Duchess Camilla, spoke about it during the documentary, as well. "I think that was very touching, sitting where I was, you couldn’t hear what he said. But afterwards watching it on the television, I… I think it was a very… it was a lovely gesture,” she said.
Camilla also went on to talk about the moment Prince Charles and Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, walked arm in arm after the ceremony. "A lot of people, seeing my husband actually take the bride’s mother by the hand to sign the registry, it’s something that moved everybody," she said. "It’s the things he does behind the scenes that people don’t know about. I don’t think people realize quite how kind he is."
