Sia Recalls Katy Perry's Battle With Depression: 'She Had A Real Breakdown'

Just a few years back, Katy Perry fell into a deep depression and it sounds like Sia was able to be a source of support.

In Perry's new profile with The Los Angeles Times, the superstar, 35, spoke about her downfall, admitting she was spiraling in a direction that was not helpful for self-growth. "The foundation started shaking and a couple of the screws started coming off," Perry admitted, adding that she kept on returning to a place where she could no longer ignore "what kept knocking." "My negative thoughts were not great. They didn’t want to plan for a future. I also felt like I could control it by saying, 'I'll have the last word if I hurt myself or do something stupid and I'll show you' — but really, who was I showing?”

Sia ended up being a confidant to the star around her breakout in 2014, serving as her "pop-star concierge" in Hollywood to get her private doctor house calls and on the list for Madonna's Grammy afterparty. However, their connection was solidified when Perry showed up to her house "in a bad way."

"She had a real breakdown,” Sia recalled of the incident. "She's on stage with ten candied lollipops and clowns and dancers, selling the dream, the joy, the happiness — and that’s really hard sometimes when you’re not feeling it yourself."

Sia went on to admit that the low times did a number to her, but in the end, she prevailed and conquered her demons. "I knew she was driven and ambitious, that was clear from the beginning. I didn’t realize that she was so reliant on that validation for her psychological well-being," the songwriting guru confessed. "She did say 'I feel lost.' I think it was a big kick to her ego, but it was the best thing that could have ever happened to her, really, because now she can make music for the fun of it. Getting No. 1s does nothing for your inside."
