Is 'Monopoly For Millenials' Offensive or Funny?

This is 100% real and 100% controversial!

Hasbro has released "Monopoly For Millennials" with the tagline: "Forget real estate. You can't afford it anyway." At first blush, it appears to be a straight-up slap in the face to anyone born after 1982 and is therefore considered a "millennial". The often-fraught generation has been the target of jokes from older generations just as the generations before them were...so that part isn't new. What IS new is that I don't think previous generations found the jokes to be so pervasive that someone went and made a special Monopoly version for them!

Available as a Walmart exclusive for the ironic (or perfect) price of $19.82 (and currently sold-out), "Monopoly For Millennials" doesn't focus on becoming a real estate magnate like the traditional version. Instead, you collect "Experience Points" from landing on spaces like "Your Parent's Basement" and "Friends Couch". When you're the first to land, you will then gain Experience Points from your friends who land on those. The winner is the person who collects the most Experience Points.

I think Hasbro is trying to go tongue-in-cheek with most of this... just look at the cover of the box, for example. The longer you stare at it, the funnier or more offensive it becomes. There's a wall of avocados! There's a FULL "Free" Parking Garage! Mr. Monopoly is wearing a "Participation" medal! OH THE HILARITY!

Look, I do indeed find the humor in this game, but I also know several millennials who think it's no laughing matter to make fun of their social status. It's a bit of a mean-spirited dig at the millennial generation, but it's also seen as a fun dig at a younger generation for the older set who still plays games like Monopoly.

Take a look at the back of the box below to get a good solid grasp of one of the boldest board games in years... I'm going to fight you for the Hashtag piece when we play.
