2nd Annual Akyra Murray Memorial Game at West Catholic Prep

The memorial game is to honor the life and legacy of Akyra Murrya - the youngest victim killed in the Orlando Pulse shooting on June 12th, 2016.

The 2nd Annual Akyra Murray Memorial Game features Philadelphia’s top girl basketball players as a tribute to Akyra’s life and legacy. Akyra touched so many people. Her impact was so great that the West Catholic Girls’ Basketball team dedicated a history-making season to Akyra as they advanced to the second round of the Philadelphia Catholic League tournament for the first time in 17 years, repeated a District 12 City Championship for the third straight year, and advanced to the PIAA State Quarterfinals for the first time in school history.

As we celebrate Akyra’s life we will also be raising awareness about gun violence. Gun violence is a disease plaguing our communities, and my sister was ripped from me because of it. I want to help end gun violence, and keep my sister’s legacy alive. On August 3rd, I plan to do just that.

"On June 12, 2016, the world lost a great leader and student-athlete, Akyra Murray, but when everyone else moved on with their lives I couldn’t. She was more than a student-athlete to me. Akyra was my little sister, my best friend, and the only person who believed in me when no one else did. When I found out my sister was killed in the Orlando shooting I was devastated. We were supposed to be celebrating her high school graduation. We were supposed to be celebrating her basketball scholarship to Mercyhurst University. Instead, my family and I were forced to mourn her untimely passing. But I refuse to let her memory die. And I will celebrate her legacy for as long as I live."
