The legendary Kenny Gamble (part of the Gamble & Huff songwriting and production team and Philadelphia International Records) sits down with Loraine Ballard Morrill to talk about his experiences growing up and listening to WDAS. Gamble hung out with the DJs at WDAS when he was young; he walked from South Philadelphia to the station out in Wynnefield to try to promote their records. Eventually Kenny Gamble became friends with Georgie Woods, a DJ on WDAS, and a community activist and civil rights leader in Philadelphia. Kenny Gamble eventually helped run errands for various WDAS djs and Georgie Woods and others gave him a chance and let him play a little music on the air when they took breaks.
Kenny Gamble also regaled us with some stories of the other DJs on WDAS, including Jimmy Bishop, Louise Bishop, Butterball, Jocko, Broadway Eddie and the great team that made up the WDAS family.
Watch the video below to hear everything he has to say about his memories and experiences.
